Indiana State Museum Online Collection
The Indiana State Museum’s collection contains hundreds of thousands of items ranging from prehistoric fossils to current popular culture items and everything in between. Most items in the collection have an important connection to the Indiana story while others may simply be an excellent example of a particular artifact from a given time period. The collection has increased throughout the nearly 150 years of the museum’s existence and is housed in the museum’s administration building as well as off-site storage facilities.
Searching
There are many ways to search the Indiana State Museum's online collection records. The "Browse By" links in the upper left corner of the home page allow searching our museum's data by clicking on lists of terms found in the online records. Standard keyword searches are done using the blank field in the upper left corner of the home page. Advanced searches can also be done by following the "advanced search" link on the home page.
Saving Groups of Artifacts
If you would like, you can create a user account to personalize your Indiana State Museum online collection records. This allows you to assign artifacts to groups as you search or browse. Artifact record groups are saved so you can view them later or share them with other users.
To get started, click on the Login link above. In the section marked "Register" enter your email address and the system will email you a password that you can use to login. Once you are logged in you can visit the Manage Favorites page to create a new group, make an existing group public so others can view it, or access groups that others have chosen to share with you.

This hat is made of cotton stamped with a red blue and green floral design. The crown is round and deep. The circular piece of cloth on the top of the crown is edged in blue silk velvet with scallped edges in the back and pointed edges in the front. On the right side of the crown, a strip of blue velvet extends from the top to the brim. It is attached to the side of the hat, and ends in two streamers, which attach to the brim on the right side. The sides of the crown are straight. The hat has a narrow band made of the cotton floral. The brim is narrow and downturned in front, and very short and straight in back. Yellow topstitching covers the entire hat. The underside of the brim is lined with dark blue velvet. The underside of the hat is lined in blue metallic cloth. A tag on the underside of the center of the crown reads: "Gage BROTHERS & CO NEW YORK PARIS CHICAGO" | |

This is a woman's cloche hat made of black satin that has a narrow brim turned up in back. There is a narrow black velvet had band. There are paisley motifs embroidered all over the crown and hat in peach, tan, and light blue thread. There is a back cotton lining. The label inside the hat reads: "Gage Brothers & Co., Chicago, New York, Paris". | |

This hat is made of light brown silk. It has deep crown, and wide band also made of tan silk, with light brown topstiching. A light brown pleated grosgrain ribbon covers the band, and ties in a knot at the back, with one loop and two streamers. A floral decoration coares the right side of the hat. It has light brown and brown silk grapes, light brown flowers, and darker brow velvet leaves. The brim is wide and flat, and turned up in the back. A dark brown braided straw strip covers the width of the brim. The underside of the brim is lined with light orange silk, and a narrow green silk cord edges the underside of the top of the crown, ending in a small green bow in back. [More Info] | |
